Fixing To Stay |
|
In May of 2000, the AARP released its landmark study “Fixing to Stay”. It points out that over 80% of those over age 45 desire to stay in their homes as long as possible, but a large percentage of those say that they either have or will need to make modifications to their homes to continue to live in them safely.
As a result of this Report, AARP and the NAHB established a course of study to equip builders and remodelers to understand the typical problems of working with America's aging housing stock and the maturing of the Boomer generation.
Bill Slease is a pioneer in the field of Universal Design to accommodate residents as they age to allow them to remain in their homes as long as they wish. He has lectured on the subject and earned leadership positions in many Homebuilding organizations.
Bill was a U.S. Navy officer during the Vietnam era, later earning an M.B.A. in corporate finance, and has an extensive background in real estate finance. He is a second-generation homebuilder. In the early 90’s he formed his own real estate firm focused on financing, land development and later construction. Bill has held a Texas Real Estate Broker License for over 35 years and has a broad range of experience with both commercial and residential propertie

Program on the Guide Dog Foundation
![]() |
"Cammie" |
Our speaker today is David Wright representing the Guide Dog Foundation and former area coordinator for the Dallas Fort Worth Guide Dog group.
He will speak on his experiences as a raiser, small group coordinator and area coordinator.
When Donna asked David if they could become puppy raisers in the spring of 1995, he replied that they could never love and train a pup for a year and then give it up. He did have to eat those words as they are currently raising their 14th future guide dog, which they will again have to “give up” in November.
They have had a passion for the blind community for over 14 years and have served by being:
-
Puppy raisers to 14 pups: 2 breeders, 8 working guides, 1 ATF, 2 released and one current pup
-
Small group leader of 5-7 puppy raisers
-
Area coordinators for 22 puppy raisers
As area coordinators and puppy raisers for Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown, New York, it is an honor and privilege to share how a single pup can make an enormous change in the life of someone who cannot see. Their last pup, Cammie, a flat coat retriever/lab cross is a VetDog/Guide Dog working for a Vietnam vet in the Atlanta area.

Because there is a lack of awareness in the community about hospice, Autumn Journey employees and volunteers have formed a speaker’s bureau to talk to groups like our retiree association. Ms. Berridge will answer the question, “What is hospice?” and tell how a hospice works. Like most speakers from the bureau she will incorporate her own personal experiences into her presentation.
